I've been a keen reader ever since I was very little, and I want to pass on my love of books to my six-month-old baby Amber. We read together every day; Amber shows her appreciation by trying to eat the pages of books she likes.
A new book on Amber's menu is Bubbe's Got The Beat, our first offering from PJ Library. It's about a bubbe dancing in the kitchen while making Shabbat dinner. Amber's own bubbe is more likely to be freaking out in the kitchen while attempting to cook, which might make for an entertaining sequel. The book, a colourfully illustrated poem, goes on to describe the whole family coming together for Shabbat. It's great to point out to Amber the things she sees every Friday night, from mummy lighting the candles to daddy making hamotzi.
Amber loves the book's lively pictures and I enjoy reading out its rhyming story to her while she grabs the pages and tries to shove them in her mouth - high appreciation indeed.
My top tip for getting your baby interested in books is to read a lot and have fun with it! Make reading time snuggle time; Amber loves sitting on my lap for a cuddle while we read. Follow your baby's lead; if she likes a particular book, read it over and over again. If she likes a certain picture, take time to talk about the picture. And, most importantly, switch off your screens so that you can both focus and enjoy cuddling up with a good book.
