Why We Chose This Book: In the Jerusalem Forest

In the Jerusalem Forest

This month is Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel Independence Day – and to mark the occasion, three- and four-year-olds and their families will receive In the Jerusalem Forest, by Jerusalem-based author and illustrator Devora Busheri and Noa Kelner. Their creative interpretation of “The Pond” by Israel’s national poet, Hayim Nahman Bialik, turns a poem in which a girl dreams of “an upside down world” into a colourful snapshot of a close moment between a mother and daughter on a spring nature walk in the woods. The simple, poetic text is a perfect accompaniment to the childlike illustrations, which give kids much to look at -- and look for -- in images reflected in the water and subtle changes of detail. This versatile book isn’t just a great bedtime story; it can lead to great conversations about nature too!

This month we also partnered with UJIA so were even more delighted to be sending out such a beautiful Israel-themed book. Fun activities linked to this book can be found at www.ujia.org/pjlibrary
