How to Transform Old T-Shirts Into Dog Toys

Illustration of dog in play bow with rope toy

Recycle some old T-shirts to make a special present for one of your lucky canine pals — or to donate to an animal shelter.  This fun and simple activity lets your children do a mitzvah and learn about two important Jewish values: kindness to animals, T’z'ar Ba'alei Chayim and not wasting, bal taschit.

This Activity Works With These Books:

My Grandfather's Coat
Latke, the Lucky Dog
Shani's Shoebox

Four tshirts and scissors

Old t-shirts and other scrap fabric

Tshirt strands braided into a dog toy

  1. Cut the T-shirts into long strips about an inch wide.
  2. Put aside two strips.
  3. Gather the rest of the strips together, using one of the reserved strips to tie them at one end.
  4. Divide the rest of the fringes into three roughly equal sections and braid them together.
  5. Tie them at the other end with the other reserved strip.
