Why We Chose This Book: A Watermelon in the Sukkah

Our three- and four-year-old subscribers will love this adorable, original Sukkot-themed book — and the rest of the family will too!

When Michael’s teacher asks the class to bring their favourite fruit to school to hang in the sukkah, the other children come in with apples, grapes, pears and bananas. But Michael’s favourite fruit is…  watermelon. Even when a classmate tells him he’s silly to think he can hang such a heavy fruit, Michael won’t be moved. After all, he’s followed Miss Sharon’s instructions!

The kids work together to come up with various ways to hang the watermelon, but to no avail. Then, just when they’re about to give up, Michael has an idea…

The Watermelon in the Sukkah has a straightforward dilemma that kids will really enjoy. There's some suspense as they wonder whether each method of hanging the watermelon will work, and families can try to come up with their own solution to Michael’s challenging situation. We like that Michael sticks to his guns in refusing to choose an alternative fruit, his determination to solve the problem and that the kids work as a team to help him do that. To top it all off, there’s a punchline that will make kids laugh every time they read the book — this is sure to be a book that kids will want to read again. It's fun, funny, and makes the prospect of having a sukkah very appealing. Plus, there’s more information about Sukkot at the back of the book.
