Why We Chose This Book: Five Little Gefiltes

Five Little Gefiltes

In a hilarious parody on the song Five Little Ducks, Dave Horowitz rewrites the main characters as talking gefilte fish who –  to the consternation of their mother – go out on the town in New York City. The selection committee felt that this book would be enjoyed by the whole family. Our 3- and 4-year-old subscribers will know the song about the ducks, while older children and parents will appreciate the humour and New York scenes in the illustrations and dialogue. A glossary at the back will help with any unfamiliar Yiddish words. The book doesn’t just have entertainment value, though; there is a Jewish value here too. The gefiltes honour their parents (kibbud av v’eim), for each of them is a mensch who comes home to Mama.
